Who Should be Laid Off ?

It is easy to be in support of welcoming labor from other countries when the rate of unemployment is low and when the economy is creating new jobs at an acceptable rate. The real test of our attitude towards “foreign” labor, however, is to be judged by our acts during difficult economic times. And this is such a time. Would we maintain, in the face of double digit unemployment, our advocacy of “openness “ or would we change course by adopting policies that are geared to protect the national labor force . Do we have a moral responsibility to take care of the near and dear that can supersede our responsibility to non nationals?
Unfortunately such questions are no longer confined to the field of the hypothetical. As the economy slows down even such juggernauts as Microsoft have announced plans to lay off 5000 workers. But Microsoft is one of the primary beneficiaries and major supporter of the special H1 visas that allows companies to hire non-American workers. As expected, many, in and out of Government are calling on Microsoft to give priority to US citizens during these difficult times. Senator Grassley has already sent Microsoft a letter in which he stated unequivocally that “Microsoft has a moral obligation to protect these American workers by putting them first “.during these difficult economic times."
What do you think?

i feel that it would be nice if microsoft can mainly hold there jobs for US citizens, but its unfair to everyone else that equally app.t for the same job.

I feel that it is good to be obligated to job security but also people can't ignore the fact that times are changing. Corporations need to downsize and jobs are being lost because of the United States becoming post-industrial. People need to do what is neccessary at these times.

I also feel that it would be nice if microsoft designated some jobs to Americans in these hard times. Although we still need to consider these large companies and how they are also struggling so regardless they are going to have to let employees go, American or not.

Jobs should go to who ever is the most qualified and hardest working, regardless of nationality. This will allow companies to be as efficent and productive as possible.

Talk about the American dream slipping down the drain, huh..The government wants to have a population of loyal citizens but in return we, the American people, get hit Laissez-faire. What a pushover! The privatization of companies and less involvement of the government works so well for chaos amongst society, doesn't it? A company becomes privately owned, thus if someone has an issue they resolve it between themselves. One issue to be argued is greed, but the people didn't teach us greed, the government did. We are all unconsciously becoming products of our environment(The United States of America). On one end of the spectrum, profit needs to be maximized, but who ever worries about the expense of maximizing profit? Stop the globalization of American jobs and make living in America a fair trade off! What have we in return but pity and sorrow? - Emmanuel Ramirez(Macro Economics - Tues.&Thurs.)

I feel that many jobs should be reserved for American citizens. But people must realize that the jobs that this illegal immigrants have are jobs that no one else wants. They are not beating out kids that just graduate college. We should focus on hiring less people from Europe that are moving here for jobs. U.S company should look to help U.S citizens before other nations citizens.

i feel that corporations do have an obligation to serve and protect american citizens first, mainly because that corporation is in america. its amazing how people that have worked their whole lives could be fired and have their job given to any random person because the job wants to pay them with a lower salary. it is not right and i know how difficult it is having to go through unemployment during a recession first hand. microsoft needs to make thoughtout, educated alterations to the company

I have to agree with William Fabian. I don't believe that special treatment should be given to an employee just because that person is a citizen. When lay offs occur, the people let go should be the ones that have poor performance and less experience. Although you normally see companies let go of the more experienced and better employees because they have to pay them more. Regardless of what type of employees they let go...the big issue here is that our economy is in shambles. what to do?

I WANT TO FIRST SAY I AM SORRY FOR WHO THIS MAY OFFEND. BUT I PERSONAL FEEL THAT ITS TIME TO BRING TO JOB BACK TO AMERICA. DONT GET ME WRONG ITS NICE THAT COMPANIES TRY TO PROVIDE JOBS FOR PEOPLE ABOARD BUT WHAT ABOUT FIXING THE ISSUES THAT WE HAVE HERE FIRST. WITH UNEMPLOYMENT GOING UP WHY NOT BRING THESE JOBS BACK HOME FOR AMERICAN PEOPLE. IT WOULD BE NICE TO CALL COMPANIES LIKE DELL OR TRAVELOCITY AND SPEAK TO SOMEONE WHO CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK ENGLISH. JUST BEING HONEST PEOPLE. ITS TIME FOR US TO TAKE CARE OF HOME. (AMANDA MCQUEEN MICRO ECO 106)

Equal Oppurtunity is a must. Also, I know if I'm the person hiring someone I will hire the person I feel will do the job best job regardless of who they are to make my company the most profitable.

I believe that job security is essential for the US. Times are rough and unemployment rates are skyrocketing. We need to find ways to secure jobs for citizens in order to make it through this recession.

I think companies should lay off non-Americans first. Americans should have job security during hard times. I agree with Senator Grassley in writing a letter stating “Microsoft has a moral obligation to protect these American workers by putting them first”. In my opinion if Microsoft were to lay of American workers first it could almost be called negligence on their part.

i feel it is a must to have American citizens as a priority during these hard times. America is going through severe difficulties and even though hiring foreigners may be a great deal cheaper i agree with Senator Grassley that there should be a moral obligation to Americans

Most people take care of their back yards but we worry more about our neighbors. Some people expect too much when they seek jobs. Everyone is looking for the right salary but at this point and time we should just be happy to be gainfully employed. Yes companies are downsizing but those that are employed need to hold on to their position as best they can. Time
to get back to basics.

If it came down to it and I was an employer, I would lay off the highest paying employee in the corporation. Reason being; I could be able to higher two lower level employees for the same pay of what I was paying the higher level one for.
